Blog Post #4 – Week 5

Inclusion in a professional setting – a reflection on how social media can play a role in helping you establish messaging and themes that are inclusive and diverse…

Social media has become an influential tool that transcends geographical boundaries and connects people from diverse backgrounds. With their immense reach and impact, social media platforms offer unparalleled opportunities for fostering inclusion and diversity within professional settings. This blog post will explore 3 ways to foster inclusion and diversity using technology.

  1. Authentic Representation: Social media offers a platform to showcase diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives. Individuals and organizations can use visual content, such as photos and videos to authentically represent people from different backgrounds. This approach helps dispel stereotypes and foster a more inclusive narrative. For example, organizations using Microsoft Teams can allow for sending videos to explain tasks.
  2. Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Social media allows individuals and groups who have historically been underrepresented in professional spaces to have their voices heard. Tools, like retweets, shares, and likes allow social media users to amplify the messages and achievements of marginalized communities, promoting diversity and inclusivity in the process. For example, social media can allow members of an organization to connect with peers of similar diverse backgrounds.
  3. Engaging in dialogue: Social media facilitates two-way communication, enabling professionals to engage in meaningful dialogue with their audience. By actively responding to comments, messages, and direct inquiries, professionals can create an inclusive space for discussion where diverse perspectives are valued and respected.

Week 3 – Blog Post #2

Digital Identity

Digital identity can be defined as the representation of an individual online and it has emerged as a significant factor in shaping people’s careers. There is an increasing number of social media platforms, online portfolios, and professional networking sites, that have developed our digital footprint into a powerful tool. Now a person’s digital footprint can both positively and negatively impact our professional trajectory.

Positive impacts on Careers –

Digital identity can offer individuals in the workplace ways to advance their careers. Through strategic online presences, professionals can showcase their skills, achievements, and expertise, which can open doors to new opportunities. Platforms like LinkedIn provide a professional space to connect with industry peers, potential employers, and mentors. Having a strong digital footprint can serve as a portfolio of accomplishments, influencing hiring decisions and elevating career prospects.

Negative impacts on careers –

In some cases, a person’s digital footprint can cause more harm and even hinder professional growth. Inappropriate social media posts, offensive comments, or unprofessional behavior can have lasting repercussions on professional opportunities. This is because our digital footprint can be seen globally and, in some cases, be permanent. Modern employers often use online background checks, making it crucial for people to maintain a positive and consistent digital image. Negative online feedback or reviews can damage reputation and credibility, potentially leading to missed career prospects or even job loss.

How are Personal Learning Networks can help our digital footprint –

A Personal Learning Network, comprising a network of individuals with shared interests, can play a crucial role in managing and enhancing digital identity. By actively engaging with professionals in a shared industry, people can gain access to a wealth of knowledge, industry trends, and opportunities. PLNs enable individuals to build a support system, seek guidance and receive constructive feedback, aiding them in refining their digital identity and career trajectory.

By leveraging the power of technology and online communities, individuals have the opportunity to expand their knowledge, connect with like-minded individuals and establish a strong digital presence.

What does it mean to a network using social media?

Networking using social medias refers to the process of building and maintaining connections with individuals and communities online. Networking through social media allows professionals to access diverse perspectives and create opportunities for career growth.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Reid, and I am thrilled to join you all in this Social Media and Personalized Education Course. I am from the picturesque city of Victoria, B.C., and I bring with me a profound passion for recreation and an insatiable curiosity for personalized learning.

Welcome and Introduction

Before proceeding with this first blog post, we expect you to consider your privacy preferences carefully and that you have considered the following options:

  1. Do you want to be online vs. offline?
  2. Do you want to use your name (or part thereof) vs. a pseudonym (e.g., West Coast Teacher)?
  3. Do you want to have your blog public vs. private? (Note, you can set individual blog posts private or password protected or have an entire blog set to private)
  4. Have you considered whether you are posting within or outside of Canada? This blog on opened.ca is hosted within Canada. That said, any public blog posts can have its content aggregated/curated onto social networks outside of Canada.

First tasks you might explore with your new blog:

  • Go into its admin panel found by adding /wp-admin at the end of your blog’s URL
  • Add new category or tags to organize your blog posts – found under “Posts” (but do not remove the pre-existing “edci338” category).
  • See if your blog posts are appearing on the course website (you must have the the edci338 category assigned to a post first and have provided your instructor with your blog URL)
  • Add pages, if you like.
  • Include hyperlinks in your posts (select text and click on the link icon in the post toolbar)
  • Embed images or set featured images and embed video in blog posts and pages (can be your own media or that found on the internet, but consider free or creative commons licensed works). To embed a YouTube video, simply paste the URL on its own line.
  • Under Dashboard/Appearance,
    • Select your preferred website theme and customize to your preferences (New title, new header image, etc.)
    • Customize menus & navigation
    • Use widgets to customize blog content and features
  • Delete this starter post (or switch it to draft status if you want to keep it for reference)

Do consider creating categories for each course that you take should you wish to document your learning (or from professional learning activities outside of formal courses). Keep note, however, that you may wish to rename the label of the course category in menus (e.g., as we did where it shows “Social Media & PL” as the label for the “edci338” category menu.  This will enable readers not familiar with university course numbers to understand what to expect in the contents.

Lastly, as always, be aware of the FIPPA as it relates to privacy and share only those names/images that you have consent to use or are otherwise public figures. When in doubt, ask us.

Please also review the resources from our course website for getting started with blogging:

You are welcome to use this blog for your personal hobbies or for other courses, in which case, you could create additional menu items and categories for them.
  3. if you give permission, your posts categorized “edci338” will be aggregated onto the Blog Feed on the EDCI 338 Course Website.
